James E. Clyburn, U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 6th district since 1993, addressed recent national events and policy issues in a series of posts on his official X account.
On September 29, 2025, Clyburn commented on an incident at a Michigan church, stating, “The violent attack at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc is an unthinkable tragedy. No one should fear the threat of any kind of violence in their place of worship. My prayers are with the victims, their families, and the Grand Blanc community.”
Later that day, Clyburn criticized immigration policies under former President Donald Trump: “Trump’s reckless and cruel immigration policies are resulting in arrests of completely innocent American citizens. Terrorizing American families, schoolchildren, and workers in the name of immigration enforcement does nothing to improve the lives of the American people.”
On September 30, 2025, he turned his attention to ongoing government funding negotiations: “Republicans would rather shut down the government than prevent health care premium increases for 20 million Americans. America is teetering on the verge of a catastrophic health care crisis. Democrats want to fix it. Republicans don’t.”
Clyburn has been an influential figure in Congress for over three decades after replacing Robin Tallon in 1993. Born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1940 and currently residing in Columbia, Clyburn graduated from South Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962.
