James E. Clyburn, U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 6th district since 1993, posted a series of statements on October 2, 2025, addressing both the Jewish community and current healthcare policy debates.
In his first message of the day, Clyburn extended greetings to those observing Yom Kippur: “I’d like to wish a blessed Yom Kippur to all those celebrating in South Carolina and across the world. I hope this day of atonement and repentance brings you another year of peace, hope, and happiness.” (October 2, 2025)
Later that afternoon, Clyburn turned his attention to health care policy. He criticized Republican approaches and made specific claims about former President Donald Trump’s legislative efforts: “It’s sad to see Republicans lying to the American people because their health care policies are so unpopular. Fact: Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’ kicks 7.5 million off health care. Fact: Trump tried repealing Obamacare 3 times and has never been interested in protecting it.” (October 2, 2025)
He followed up with further criticism regarding recent votes affecting Medicaid and health insurance premiums: “Trump and Republicans just voted to kick 7.5 million Americans off Medicaid and previously voted to end Obamacare 3 times. 20 million Americans are about to see their health care premiums go up because of their inaction. Republicans don’t want you to know that, and are instead” (October 2, 2025)
Jim Clyburn has represented South Carolina’s 6th District in Congress since replacing Robin Tallon in 1993. Born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1940, Clyburn is currently based in Columbia and is an alumnus of South Carolina State University.
