James E. Clyburn, a member of the U.S. Congress representing South Carolina’s 6th district since 1993, has recently taken to social media to criticize Republican actions related to a government shutdown and proposed changes to health care policy.

On October 3, 2025, Clyburn stated, “It’s telling that throughout Republicans’ shutdown lies, they aren’t denying Trump’s bill and reduced ACA tax credits will strip health care from 15 million Americans and double average premiums for 17 million more. Pay attention to what they aren’t saying, not what they are.”

The following day, Clyburn highlighted polling data regarding public support for maintaining current tax credits: “78% of Americans, and 57% of MAGA Republicans, want Congress to keep https://t.co/5ipy3hNFl8 plans affordable by keeping tax credits at the same level. Republicans are out of touch with their own voters and need to come to the table to end this shutdown. https://t.co/sLatxhc83p” This post was made on October 4.

Later that same day, Clyburn reiterated his position on the issue: “Republicans are lying about the shutdown because they’re desperate to distract from Trump’s bill and reduced ACA tax credits stripping health care from 15 million and substantially increasing premiums for millions more. They want you to ignore this looming health care crisis.”

Clyburn’s remarks reflect ongoing debates in Congress over government funding and potential changes affecting Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. The referenced proposals have raised concerns among Democrats about significant impacts on access and affordability of health coverage for millions of Americans.

Jim Clyburn has served as a representative since succeeding Robin Tallon in 1993. Born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1940, he is now based in Columbia. He holds a bachelor’s degree from South Carolina State University earned in 1962.
