James E. Clyburn, U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 6th district since 1993, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and health care negotiations in a series of posts on October 3, 2025.
In his first post, Clyburn commented on the political debate over responsibility for the shutdown: “Republicans have been bending over backwards claiming Democrats are to blame for this shutdown. But the American people aren’t stupid. Far more Americans rightly believe Republicans are responsible.” (October 3, 2025)
Later that day, he emphasized Democrats’ willingness to cooperate: “Democrats want to work across the aisle to end the shutdown and protect Americans’ health care. Speaker Johnson is very clear that House Republicans have no interest in that.” (October 3, 2025)
Clyburn also highlighted the impact of the shutdown on health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act: “Just a reminder that more Republicans are enrolled in Affordable Care Act health care plans than Democrats. Yet Republicans in Congress are refusing to negotiate to keep https://t.co/5ipy3hNFl8 plans affordable.” (October 3, 2025)
Jim Clyburn has served as a representative from South Carolina’s 6th District since succeeding Robin Tallon in 1993. Born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1940 and currently residing in Columbia, Clyburn graduated from South Carolina State University with a BA in 1962.
