James E. Clyburn, U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 6th district since 1993, posted a series of tweets on August 1, 2025, criticizing former President Donald Trump’s recent economic policies and their impact on job growth and tariffs.
In his first tweet at 18:55 UTC, Clyburn commented on the latest employment numbers: “Trump’s economy added just 73,000 jobs in July—far below expectations. May and June’s gains were revised down nearly 90%, from 291,000 to 33,000. This marks the weakest three months of job growth since the catastrophic shock of the pandemic.”
Later that evening at 21:05 UTC, Clyburn addressed Trump’s tariff policy: “In April, Trump delayed massive tariffs to give countries time to ‘strike deals.’ Yesterday was his deadline. He’s reached agreements with just 8 countries and the EU, and is ratcheting up tariffs again. Trump’s failing ‘strategy’ is driving up costs for the American people.”
At 23:07 UTC on the same day, Clyburn referenced reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics regarding job growth figures and alleged political interference: “The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the economy added much fewer jobs than expected over the last few months. Trump didn’t like that his numbers were bad. He wanted high numbers. So he fired the bureau chief to hire someone who’d report better ones.”
Jim Clyburn has represented South Carolina’s 6th District in Congress since replacing Robin Tallon in 1993. Born in Sumter in 1940 and currently residing in Columbia, Clyburn graduated from South Carolina State University with a BA in 1962.
