James E. Clyburn, a member of the U.S. Congress representing South Carolina’s 6th district since 1993, used his social media account on September 23, 2025, to address rising consumer costs and criticize former President Donald Trump’s economic policies.
In a post dated September 23, 2025, Clyburn stated: “The cost of groceries last month went up at its fastest rate in three years. Trump keeps claiming grocery prices are coming down, but grocery bills don’t lie.”
Later that day, he commented specifically on coffee prices: “The cost of coffee has jumped nearly 21% compared to a year ago. A big reason is Trump’s 50% tariff on goods from Brazil—the world’s largest coffee producer and America’s main supplier. This is Trumpflation.” On the same date, he further argued: “The cost of essentials like housing, food, health care, and electricity is outpacing inflation. Trump promised to cut these costs but is instead launching trade wars, seeking retribution against ‘enemies,’ and injecting chaos into our economy.”
Clyburn has served as the representative for South Carolina’s 6th District since succeeding Robin Tallon in 1993. He was born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1940 and currently resides in Columbia. Clyburn graduated from South Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962.
