James E. Clyburn, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing South Carolina’s 6th district since 1993, has recently shared his views on economic and personal matters via social media. His recent posts highlight concerns over economic policies and express personal sentiments regarding a fellow politician.
On May 16, 2025, Clyburn addressed the state of American confidence in the economy, attributing its near-record low to former President Trump’s tariff policies. He stated, “BREAKING: Americans’ confidence in the economy is now at a near record low because of Trump’s tariffs.” Clyburn criticized these tariffs for leading to higher prices and job losses, suggesting that they were part of Trump’s strategy to “win” a trade war.
Later that day, he commented on Walmart’s decision to raise prices due to these tariffs. He noted that items such as bananas, avocados, and coffee would become more expensive and predicted similar actions from other retailers. Clyburn remarked, “Walmart just announced they’ll be raising prices because of Trump’s tariffs.” He directly linked these price increases to decisions made by President Trump.
On May 18, 2025, Clyburn expressed his personal sorrow upon learning about President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. He offered his support through a heartfelt message stating, “I am saddened to learn of my dear friend President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis.” He conveyed his prayers for Biden and acknowledged Biden’s history as a fighter full of courage.
Jim Clyburn was born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1940 and currently resides in Columbia. A graduate of South Carolina State University with a BA earned in 1962, he succeeded Robin Tallon in Congress over three decades ago.
