James E. Clyburn, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing South Carolina’s 6th district, has recently addressed several pressing issues through his social media platform.
On June 10, 2025, Clyburn highlighted the issue of homelessness in America. He stated that “771,000 people are experiencing homelessness in America.” He criticized former President Trump’s budget proposal for its significant cuts to Housing and Urban Development programs. Clyburn invited his audience to watch an Appropriations Committee hearing with the Secretary of HUD.
Later that day, he marked the anniversary of President Kennedy signing the Equal Pay Act on June 10, 1963. In a tweet posted at 21:30 UTC, he noted that “62 years later, women still earn on average $0.76 for every dollar a man earns.” Clyburn contrasted this ongoing wage disparity with what he described as Republican priorities focused on tax breaks for billionaires.
At 22:11 UTC on the same day, Clyburn discussed his legislative efforts concerning gun violence prevention. He mentioned reintroducing a bill to close the Charleston Loophole and supporting Rep. Thompson’s initiative for universal background checks. Additionally, he shared a personal moment from his participation in these efforts by stating “I also had the pleasure of looking after @RepPettersen’s baby boy Sam as she spoke—a reminder of”.
Jim Clyburn has been serving in Congress since replacing Robin Tallon in 1993 and represents South Carolina’s 6th district. Born in Sumter in 1940 and currently residing in Columbia, he graduated from South Carolina State University with a BA in 1962.
