James E. Clyburn, a seasoned member of the U.S. Congress representing South Carolina’s 6th district since 1993, has voiced his opposition to former President Donald Trump’s spending bill through a series of tweets. The Congressman expressed his disapproval of the proposed legislation and its potential impacts on various sectors.
On July 2, 2025, Clyburn announced his intention to vote against the spending bill in Washington D.C., citing concerns over its economic implications. He stated, “I’m in D.C. and I’m voting NO on Trump’s spending bill.” He criticized the bill for providing substantial tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans while significantly reducing funding for healthcare and increasing national debt.
Continuing his critique on July 3, Clyburn addressed claims made by Trump regarding the impact of healthcare cuts within the bill. In a tweet, he challenged Trump’s assertion that people would not feel these reductions, saying “Tell that to the 17 million people who are about to lose their health coverage, Donald.”
Later that day, Clyburn reiterated his stance after casting his vote against the bill. He emphasized the detrimental effects he believes it will have on working-class citizens and condemned Republican lawmakers for supporting it. He remarked, “In all of my years in Congress, I’ve never seen such a betrayal of the working class.”
Jim Clyburn has been a prominent figure in Congress since taking office in 1993 after succeeding Robin Tallon. Born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1940 and currently residing in Columbia, Clyburn holds a BA from South Carolina State University obtained in 1962.
