Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center: A COVID-19 Story: Megan Thompson

Megan

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center issued the following announcement on October 6.

Megan Thompson is now home recovering and enjoying her newborn baby girl after being diagnosed and hospitalized for COVID-19 in August. A recovery process she says was much easier due to the care she received at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center.

On August 25, Megan gave birth to daughter, Oakley, and just days later on September 3, Megan presented to the Carolina Pines Emergency Department with symptoms of weakness and fatigue. “To say I was terrified is an understatement,” says Megan. She was admitted, diagnosed with COVID-19 and Pneumonia, and was immediately placed on oxygen to help her breathe.

The next day, Megan’s symptoms continued to worsen, so the decision was made for her to be placed on the ventilator. Megan states that she does not remember anything that happened before being placed on life support. During this time, Megan’s family and friends rallied around her and prayed continuously for improvement and healing.

After five days on the ventilator, Megan was able to come off and was immediately greeted and comforted by a nurse when she did not know where she was. “I couldn't have asked for better doctors, nurses or therapists. They all had very positive attitudes and helped push me to reach my goal of getting better and coming home.” Megan underwent extensive therapy to help strengthen her muscles and lungs so that she could be transferred out of the ICU.

On September 12, Megan was discharged home with an oxygen machine due to the condition of her lungs. “I couldn't wait to get home to my girls and family. The hardest part of being in the hospital for me was being away from my girls and the rest of my family. During my time at Carolina Pines, I was able to FaceTime my husband, parents, and girls. Being able to see their faces eased my mind and reminded me that I wasn't in this fight alone,” says Megan.

Megan is so appreciative of the care she received while at Carolina Pines and would like to personally thank Dr. Bill Martin, Dr. Brian Sponseller and Dr. Abraham Areephanthu. “Their care and positive words is what got me back home to my family. I cannot thank them enough for all they did for me.”

Megan says life is almost back to normal now. “After this experience, I have learned that life can truly change in the blink of an eye and not to take one minute for granted. I have learned to appreciate the little things in life much more.” She is enjoying her three beautiful girls and is says that she is forever thankful that for the prompt care she received when presenting to the ER with COVID-19 symptoms.  Megan states that her experiences at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center have been great. “I will continue to use Carolina Pines for my family’s medical needs.”
