Vascular Surgeon Dr. Carmen Piccolo and the team at McLeod Regional Medical Center performed the 400th TCAR case at McLeod on Oct. 31.
On October 31, the 400th McLeod Health Transcarotid Artery Revascularization or TCAR case was performed at McLeod Regional Medical Center by Vascular Surgeon Dr. Carmen Piccolo and his vascular team.
TCAR is a minimally invasive carotid artery treatment which reverses blood flow keeping blood clots away from the brain to prevent a stroke. Ischemic strokes account for 80 to 90 percent of strokes. An estimated 20 to 30 percent of those are caused by blockages in the carotid arteries, which carry blood to the brain. If left untreated these blockages can lead to a stroke. TCAR is performed through a small incision at the neckline. It implements a system to protect any plaque that may break loose during the procedure from reaching the brain and potentially causing a stroke. A stent is then placed that holds the carotid artery open to allow normal blood flow back to the brain reducing the patient’s stroke risk.
