November is National Epilepsy Awareness month, an annual event to raise awareness of this neurological disorder that causes seizures. Dr. Christopher Zust, McLeod Neurological Associates, offers the following advice: “Sometimes it is hard to tell when a person is having a seizure. They may seem confused or look like they are blankly staring. Seizures can cause a person to fall, shake, and become unaware of what is going on. Seizures are classified into two groups: generalized, which affects both sides of the brain, and focal, which affects just one area of the brain. A person with epilepsy can have more than one kind of seizure. Call 911 for seizures lasting more than 5 minutes.”
