November is National Epilepsy Awareness month, an annual event to raise awareness of this neurological disorder that causes seizures. Nicole Parotta, NP, McLeod Neurology Seacoast, offers the following safety advice on seizures: “Knowing what NOT to do during a seizure to keep a person safe is just as important as knowing what to do. Never hold the person down or try to stop their movements. Do not put anything in their mouth. This can injure their teeth or jaw. There is no risk of a person swallowing their tongue during a seizure. Do not try to perform CPR. People usually start breathing again on their own after a seizure. Do not offer food or water until they are fully alert. If the seizure lasts longer than five minutes, call 911.”
