James E. Clyburn, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing South Carolina’s 6th district, has expressed concerns over recent actions taken by former President Donald Trump regarding educational and social policies. Clyburn, who has been in office since 1993, shared his views through a series of tweets addressing these issues.
On March 20, 2025, Clyburn criticized Trump's stance on Project 2025 and its implications for the Department of Education. He stated that "Trump pretended he wouldn’t implement Project 2025 because he knew how destructive and unpopular it was." He accused Trump of being untruthful about his intentions to dismantle the Department of Education, which Clyburn claims will negatively impact teachers and college students.
The following day, March 21, 2025, Clyburn addressed an executive action taken by Trump to close the Department of Education. He tweeted that "Trump just signed an 'Executive Order' to close the Department of Education. He can't do that, and he knows it." Clyburn argued that reducing staff in an already understaffed department would lead to inefficiency rather than efficiency.
Later on March 21, 2025, Clyburn turned his attention to Social Security concerns under Trump's administration. He highlighted a disconnect between wealthy administration members and those who rely on Social Security benefits. In his tweet, he stated that "The billionaires in the Trump Administration have no idea what it’s like to rely on Social Security earned through a lifetime of hard, honest work." Clyburn assured that Democrats would oppose any attempts by Trump's cabinet to undermine these benefits.
